Glow in the Dark Mountain Dew

A recent video has exploded around Youtube, Pinterest, and Facebook, about the drink Mountain Dew and its mysterious potential to glow in the dark. Does this really work? Let’s explore the science behind it!

  • 1 Medium sized bottle of Mountain Dew
  • Baking Soda
  • 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

What to Do

  1. Pour out Mountain Dew until only 1/4 is left in the bottle
  2. To the remaining 1/4, add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
  3. To the solution, add 3 full caps of hydrogen peroxide
  4. Shake the bottle and look for the glow!

What Happened?

This procedure is from the popular video online, and does not work! It is simply a hoax, because the materials (hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and mountain dew) do not react in a chemical reaction to emit light! When a chemical reaction emits light, the type of science is called chemiluminescence. Although the internet procedure did not work, you can still get Mountain Dew to glow using a florescent dye such as Luminol. When Luminol is oxidized by the hydrogen peroxide, the electrons in the dye become excited and emit a glow! Different florescent dyes emit different colors.
